What will the weather be like?

Little hotel (riad) in Fez, MoroccoRiad al Bartal is a French family-owned house just one street away from the main entrance to the medina. As you step into the courtyard, you will immediately be struck by the profusion of plants that frame the intimate central patio and dining area. Mireille and Christian have created a homely atmosphere that extends to the spacious bedrooms; there is no wildly ornate decor here, but rather soft hues, tasteful zelliges and glistening marble.

The spacious bedrooms are also characterised by traditional Moroccan artisan work and a collection of European furniture, plus a range of paintings by contemporary Moroccan artists that the family have sought out. The absence of television and telephones in the rooms gives emphasis to the element of retreat that constitutes a stay in this riad. Instead, you can head for the cosy lounge and peruse the quite extensive range of guide books the owners have left there, in order for you to plan the activities that will make up your stay in this most mediaeval of mediaeval cities.

The patio is a riot of plants giving a garden atmosphere right here in the centre of a traditional arabic city. Up on the roof, the open space and views over and beyond the city are a wonderful contrast to the busy streets and alleyways of the medina.

The Laroche family are well-connected in Fes, and they have contacts that allow for visits to the medina’s palaces and medersas (Arabic schools) . It may even be possible to have a private tour of one of the palaces that is closed to the general public. Whatever your needs in terms of guides, massage, treatments or excursions outside the city, they can arrange it for you.

Restaurant:

Dining at Riad al Bartal is for residents only, so it's important to book in advance. Fatima takes care of preparing the meals, and she is more than happy to share the secrets of her recipes with guests, or prepare something that has been specially requested. Breakfast also comes recommended, eaten either under the galleried arches of the patio or up on the roof terrace.

A Word From the Owner:

"Riad al Bartal, which means the house of Fez, is a magical refuge one block from a main entrance to the medina. The central patio, illuminated by the sun, contrasts with the soft lights of the rooms, where one finds detailed zelliges, polished marble, delicious scents of cedar, red and gold of lacquered woods, all inviting you to rest, relax and let things go."

What We Say:

Both a hotel and a family home, Riad al Bartal has a special atmosphere all of its own. It is packed with pot plants, wonderful tiles, tadelakt bathrooms, huge cedarwood doors; we especially love the unique bath-tub crafted from a copper tanning vat in the Seffarine Suite.

Customer Feedback:

"Spectacularly beautiful riad. You could not ask for a more lovely setting. The staff, especially Omar, are fantastic and will do anything they can to make your stay enjoyable. It is on a quiet street in the medina but only a 10-12 minute walk from the main attractions. Breakfast was the best of any place we stayed in Morocco. The rooms are lovely and the cost is quite reasonable. We stayed there five nights and truly enjoyed ourselves. Would definitely recommend it to anyone."

"When we walked through the humble door of the Al Bartal we were blown away by the most stunningly beautiful and romantic atmosphere. Candles glowing everywhere plants cascading from the balconies objects of art dotted throughout the riad and not forgetting the delightful staff.every part of this riad is a joy to experience."
