Ryad Mabrouka is a haven from the flurry of life in the medina owned by Michel, a well-travelled Frenchman who has worked in the hotel business in France, Dubai, South Africa and the USA.
He and his team of multi-lingual staff (English is among the languages spoken) are your hosts at this eight-bedroom 14th-century mansion located in the historic medina of Fez.
The interior courtyard with sculpted plaster work on the columns, magnificent wooden doors of native Moroccan cedar, its babbling fountain, and the colourful and typical Moroccan mosaics opens onto a fragrant garden of roses and citrus trees, and a small but inviting swimming pool.
The accommodation is primarily composed of an assortment of suites and a couple of slightly smaller rooms, furnished and decorated with a carefully selected collection of French antiques and locally-crafted items. The decor is one of tasteful restraint mixed with typically exuberant Moroccan patterns.
From the rooftop terrace, there is a delightful panoramic view of the medina and the neighbouring countryside. The dining area also has magnificent views over the city. Indoors and out (and of course, in a Moroccan riad, that is a distinction that is sometimes somewhat blurred) there is a great sense of space as this hotel seems to take up a little more than its share of the medina.
Restaurant:
Lunches and dinners are available on request for hotel guests, served either in the garden or on the verandah overlooking the city. The typical Moroccan food is highly regarded, or French or Mediterranean cuisine is available if preferred. At Christmas time when the culinary bias swings towards France, Michel has been known to venture into the kitchen himself!Hover on a picture to pause the slideshow, click for a bigger photo

What We Say:
It's so good to find a riad in the medina that has so much space outside: a garden and a swimming pool!Customer Feedback:
"Beautiful riad, great balance of location, comfort and price - clean, pretty, bathrooms with towels, etc; great breakfasts (a little too much to eat) and lovely dinner; refreshing plunge pool."
"There's little to say. This was as nearly perfect as anywhere I've ever stayed. Beautiful rooms. Fantastic staff. It was just gorgeous. Don't miss this if you are in Fes."
We will welcome your comments after you have visited this hotel. Send feedback
