Riyad Al Moussika, once the residence of the notorious Pacha of Marrakech, is a spacious traditional Moroccan Palace with black and white Carrara marble chequered floors and cedar wood ceilings. It lies just a five-minute walk from the Place Jemaa el Fna, hidden behind strong walls that shut out the bustle of the Marrakech medina (a very practical location and it is a lot easier to find than many of the city's riads. Riad in marrakesh

This veritable haven is built around a series of courtyards, a sensory overload of mosaic tiles, carved and painted wood, beautiful paintings and luxuriant rugs and furnishings. Although the riyad has only five guest rooms, there are a multiplicity of places to relax- by the long decorative 'Andaluz' pool, in the white marble hammam (similar to a Turkish bath), in the music room with its grand piano and doors out to the patio garden, or on the rooftop terrace with its views of the medina and the Atlas mountains.

Each of the six rooms (including two suites), all beautifully furnished, have decorative ceilings and en-suite facilities with either bath or shower or both. Special care has been taken over the beds which have Egyptian cotton sheets, English lambswool blankets in winter, pure cotton covers in summer, goosedown or non-allergenic pillows and top quality mattresses in natural fibres with comfortable orthopaedic springs. A few days here will make every guest fall in love with the soothingly hedonistic luxuries of this magnificent style of living.

There's something else though that steals the show - perhaps it's better considered an integral part of the whole experience, but the stand-out reason to stay here is the exceptional quality of the food and the extraordinarily good prices of it. Khalid is a has a Grand Diploma in Cordon Bleu cooking and he and his team make exceptional meals. There is both an Italian menu and a Moroccan one, and at 10-12 euros per main course, it is both divine and similarly priced to other meals in the medina and divine. There are many riads to choose from with lower room rates, but Riyad Al Moussika has such well-priced meals, you may want to eat in again and again! And if "eat in" sounds like a term for home, as opposed to the normal "eating out" in a restaurant, well, it's because the experience of Riyad Al Moussika is exquisite. This is what you're paying for.

Manager Houssine and his team are there to welcome you back to the palace each time you return from the outside hub of activitity. His knowledge of Marrakech, the places to see, the places to eat, the places to shop, is the icing on the cake for a wonderful North African experience.

Restaurant:

Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are all available. The beautiful dining room is a delightful location for an intimate dinner. Chef Khalid (Grand Diploma Cordon Bleu) offers a delicious selection of Italian and Moroccan dishes, including plenty of options for vegetarians. Breakfast is magnificent with fantastic Moroccan yoghurt with honey, fruit salad, toast with marmalade and butter, pancakes, eggs, morning pastries, coffee and fresh orange juice.
